Safety is the solution to avoid Deaths of Nigerians from explosions

The chairman of the Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations of the House of Representatives, Hon David Idris Zacharias has expressed his concern about the increasing rate of tanker explosions in Nigeria, these issues likely raises questions about the adherence to safety regulations amongst Downstream operators of the oil and gas sector of the country, his concerns are not only about the safety of tankers transporting PMS and other end products of crude oil but also in the solid minerals mining sectors of the economy.
The recent tanker explosion on the Enugu-Onitsha express way, the second in the month of January alone gives reasons for the quick interventions and scrutiny of the safety check list for transporting petroleum products by tankers in the country, while extending Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Enugu incidence, The chairman also uses this opportunity to Appeal to all stakeholders in the Hydrocarbons Mining and Solid Minerals extraction sector to join hands with the safety standards and regulations committee to come up with new techniques and safety mechanisms to prevent future re-occurrences of such tragic accidents in these sectors.
The recent explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegun local government area of Niger state, Where avoidable deaths of numerous people happened is a pointer to the fact that safety levels in the Solid Minerals sector are low or inexistence, just because no attention has been paid to the sector in recent times as led to a decline in safety consciousness by industry players and this situation is unacceptable, According Hon David Idris Zacharias, A consultant has been engaged by the committee to look into the adherence to safety standards and regulations by legally certified miners in the country to ensure all solid minerals extraction companies obey all safety laws and regulations.
Hon David Idris Zacharias is using this opportunity to appeal to all stake holders in the Hydrocarbons Mining and Solid Minerals extraction sector of the Economy to collaborate with the committee and participate in the upcoming National Summit on safety in the Hydrocarbons mining and Solid Minerals extraction sector of the Nigerian Economy 2025 coming up in May 2025 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
